McCarthy. It became affiliated with the Building Service Employees' International Union in 1962, now known as the Service Employees International Union. In 1990 the local had a membership of 1,850. The collection consists of correspondence, constitutions, labor agreements, annual reports, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and publications. The collection primarily relates to the East Ohio Gas Company, including Ohio Public Utilities Commission hearings on rate increase requests and service cutbacks during the 1970s energy crisis. Along with his three brothers he operated Spence Brothers Construction Company. His nephew, Stanley L. Orr served with Troop A Cavalry Regiment in the Texas-Mexican border dispute of 1916-1917 and was a judge and chairman of the Cleveland Chapter of the Red Cross during World War I. The collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, financial records, and a scrapbook. Van Sickle began a small machine shop, called Cleveland Aircraft Products Company (CAPCO), in his home in Rocky River, Ohio. By 1945, office headquarters had moved to Ontario Street in downtown Cleveland. The company produced wheel and brake mechanisms for aircraft. Van Sickle married Edith Newman of Cleveland in 1931. It expanded to include branch plants and the production of aircraft parts, and fostered a company union, the Automotive and Aircraft Workers Alliance (later the Aircraft Workers Alliance). It grew during World War II due to defense contracts. After the war it entered the jet and aerospace industries. It merged in 1958 with Ramo Wooldridge Corp. to become TRW Inc. Outside activities include the National Air Races and the Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of minute books, correspondence, memoranda, financial records, newsletters, histories, and publications, the bulk of which relate to Thompson Products, Inc. and its subsidiaries during the 1930s and 1940s and bear largely upon labor management relations. His volunteer and philanthropic activities included work for the Jewish Big Brothers Association of Cleveland, the Citizen's Advisory Board to the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court, the Ohio Department on Aging, and the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Board of Education. He married Isabelle Gup in 1934. She was a graduate of Case Western Reserve University. Active in the Cleveland Section, National Council of Jewish Women, she served as president of that organization and was active on the national and international level. She also was first chair of the Women's Organization of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, served on the national executive council of the American Jewish Committee, and was the first chair of the Greater Cleveland Women's Committee for Civil Rights. Walter Nord was the president of U. S. Automatic Corporation (f. 1909) of Amherst, Ohio, a company which manufactured screw machine parts for the automotive industry. Walter Nord and his sons, Evan and Eric Nord, organized the Nordson Corporation in 1954 as a subsidiary of U. S. Automatic Corporation. The Nordson Corporation, headquartered in Westlake, Ohio, is a multinational company that designs, manufactures, and markets systems that apply adhesives, sealants, and coatings to a broad range of consumer and industrial products during the manufacturing process. The Nordson Foundation was a philanthropic organization which provided financial support primarily in the areas of public service, social problems, family services, and education. The Nord family, including Walter's sons Eric and Evan Nord, and Cleveland lawyer William Ginn, guided the foundation through 1980. In 1988 the foundation was reorganized to create the Nord Family Foundation and the Nordson Corporation Foundation. Since its inception, the Nord Family Foundation has primarily served Lorain County, Ohio, and has been based in the Lorain-Elyria area. As of 1993, the foundation was headquartered in Elyria, Ohio. Its charitable activities, however, have sometimes reached into neighboring locales, particularly Cuyahoga County and Cleveland, and touched other areas of Ohio and the nation. In addition to the foundation, the Nord family is also noted for its involvement in the development of inventions, including innovations in areas as diverse as spray painters and robotics. The collection consists of articles of incorporation, minutes of the board of trustees, policies and procedures, a mission statement, resolutions, correspondence, financial reports, contract bids and specifications, newspaper clippings, memoranda, pamphlets, publications, accounting journals, budgets, tax returns, affidavits, and materials related to projects and activities of the foundation, with grant proposals (1980-1984) compromising the bulk of the materials. The collection consists of grant files, both accepted and declined, which include agreements, award letters, brochures, budgets, correspondence, evaluations, financial statements, forms, memoranda, newsletters, notes, press releases, programs, proposals, and reports. All photographs and audio/visual media have been retained in their respective grant files. The Cleveland Foundation Assistance to Other Foundations series contains much the same document types as the grant files. He emigrated to the United States in 1885, and settled in Cleveland in 1900. In 1900, he and his future mother-in-law, Rebecca Korach, purchased a skirt manufacturing company formerly known as Goodman and Korach Co. The new company, known as Julius Klein and Co., closed within a few years. In 1906, Klein was employed by Korach Sonnenfield Co., a cloak manufacturing company which in 1907 became the Korach-Ecker Co. In 1913, Klein opened Klein's Economy Store on Woodland Ave., selling women's ready-to-wear apparel. Following Julius Klein's death, his son, Alwyn Klein, continued the business. Following his death, his wife Beatrice operated the business until its liquidation in 1959. Most of the owners of garment manufacturing firms in Cleveland, as throughout the United States, were owned by Jewish immigrants. The garment industry in Cleveland declined as a whole in the late twentieth century. In the early 2010s, the Western Reserve Historical Society began making efforts toward compiling the stories of the Cleveland garment industry through research and oral history interviews, culminating in a book and exhibition project titled A Stitch in Time: The Cleveland Garment Industry. | | | | Creator: | Harper, Alexander Family | | | | Dates: | 1755-1935 | | | | Abstract: | Alexander Harper, a Revolutionary War officer, brought his family to settle in Ashtabula County, Ohio (then a part of the Western Reserve) in 1798. The settlement was named Harpersfield by the family after their hometown in New York. After Alexander Harper's death in September 1798, his widow Elizabeth Harper was joined in 1799 by Alexander's brother Joseph and by her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Aaron Wheeler. Elizabeth's children; William, Elizabeth, John A., James A., Alexander, and Robert, all became prominent members of the community. In 1814, the Harpers were among those who organized the Harpersfield Commercial Company. Most prominent of the Harper brothers was Robert, who married Polly Hendry in 1815 and began construction of the family homestead, Shandy Hall. Robert was a lawyer, farmer, businessman, Superintendent of the Public Works at Cunningham Creek, and a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. His nephew, Rice Harper, was also a prominent lawyer and businessman, and was involved in the Ohio Rail Road Company with his uncle. Robert Harper's daughter Ann moved to Sandusky, Ohio, shortly after her marriage to Dr. Aaron Austin. His eldest daughter Ellen lived at Shandy Hall with her youngest sister Jane and Jane's husband, Alexander J. Harper. The last owners of Shandy Hall were Stella and Ann Harper, the two daughters of Alexander and Jane Harper. After the death of Ann Harper in 1935, the property was maintained by the David Z. Norton family, cousins of the Harpers. In 1948, the Norton family donated Shandy Hall to the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of two albums, loose photographs, a notebook, and a booklet containing photographs related to the career of George M. Humphrey of Cleveland, Ohio. Included are portraits of Humphrey as a child, with President Dwight Eisenhower and various members of the Eisenhower administration, and with his wife, Pamela Stark Humphrey. Group photographs contain views of Eisenhower's second inauguration that include Vice President Richard M. Nixon; business associates of Humphrey; various ceremonies, receptions, and dinners attended by Humphrey and his wife; photographs of Humphrey receiving various honorary academic degrees at a number of institutions; Humphrey with Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain; and travel photographs, including several trips with President Eisenhower and other cabinet members. A booklet contains photographs and maps relating to the operation of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. | | | | Creator: | Curtis Industries, Inc. | | | | Dates: | 1935-1961 | | | | Abstract: | Curtis Industries, Inc. was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1932 by William Abrams and two of his sons, Morris and Howard, as Clipper Key and Lock Co. The company initially sold several brands of key cutting machines throughout the Cleveland area and the Midwest. In 1934, the Abrams worked together with inventor William Curtis to invent a new key cutting machine that they could manufacture and distribute themselves. The machine was patented, and the company changed its name to Curtis Key Co. The company's focus was on key cutting machines and key blanks, which they both manufactured and sold. However, during World War II, the company concentrated solely on defense work and ceased to manufacture of keys and key machines. Following the war, the company changed its name to Curtis Industries, Inc. and resumed its work on key machines and key blanks. The company also began manufacturing and selling automotive and farm equipment replacement parts. In 1961, Curtis Industries built a large facility in Eastlake, Ohio. Previously, Curtis had operated sites on Carnegie Avenue, Prospect Avenue, and East 222nd Street in Cleveland. The new building in Eastlake consolidated all of Curtis's branches and various operations. The new site was considered state-of-the-art and garnered much publicity. In 1961, the Cleveland Chapter of the American Materials Handling Society recognized Curtis with is award for the best materials handling system in Northeast Ohio.
